Layla Banihashemi, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research is focused on how various aspects of early life experience, from childhood abuse to neighborhood disadvantage, influence the structure and function of stress-responsive brain areas. We place this research within a larger societal context to identify how these early experience-related brain differences contribute to mental health inequities later in life.
