Resources For Researchers
By increasing awareness of state-of-the-science measures that are well-validated to assess determinants of health in diverse populations and that eliminate the use of biased-language when assessing identities, we hope to improve the quality and translation of psychiatric research addressing diverse populations to improve health equity.
This library was created through the contributions of a large community of researchers and is ever-growing. We invite submissions of measures that you have used in your health equity research activities to be considered for inclusion in this library. Contact us to comment or contribute to the library.
REACH has compiled ‘recommended sociodemographic questions’ for researchers to consider for use in their studies.
In addition to the measures recommended by REACH members (see below), the PhenX Toolkit, supported by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), maintains a freely available collection of measures assessing social determinants of health.
1. REACH maintains a list of Building an Inclusive and Equitable Lab for building an inclusive and equitable lab.
2. The American Psychological Association has published comprehensive guidelines for using bias-free language that promotes accuracy, respect, and inclusivity when disseminating research findings.
3. Numerous working groups and societies have generated reading lists to support best practices in 1) assessing determinants of health in diverse communities, 2) supporting scientists in reducing bias in research and increasing community engagement, 3) training future generations of health equity researchers and increasing representation in science, and 4) advocating for policy changes that reduce inequities.
REACH supports the following reading lists that aim to achieve the above goals:
Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP) Diversity Syllabus
Association for Psychological Science (APS) DiSSECT (Dismantling Systemic Shortcomings in Education and Clinical Training) Resources
4. The National Institutes of Health launched the UNITE initiative in 2021 to address structural racism and increase equity and inclusivity in biomedical research. REACH encourages researchers to become familiar with this initiative including the funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) and advisory committees that are included within UNITE.
